Word 2003 Hyperlinks to Mapped Drive, or UNC causing a problem

The end user was getting a message on the word 2003 status bar “running virus scan” every time they would open a Word document.  Word would not open the document it would eventually crash.

My Solution

Ran regedit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options

New-Dword

Name: Volume

Value: 2

(NOTE: VALUE: 1 ALSO WORKED)

I added this registry entry to all version of word installed in the registry.
